Public CollegeTackles Obesity Epidemic

The front page of CNN.com today features an article about Lincoln University and their current graduation requirements. According to the article, all students at Lincoln University must have their BMI (Body Mass Index) calculated before they are allowed to graduate. Any students who fall in the range of obese on the BMI scale are required to take a fitness class that meets three times a week. Students that do not pass the class will not be permitted graduation. The school started this requirement three years ago and is now facing some heavy criticism. It is interesting to see a school stepping up and taking action in favor of good health practices. It is no secret that obesity is a growing problem worldwide, and especially in America. I think this policy seems like a good idea and step in the right direction in order to teach people good health habits to help them through the rest of their life. Those against the policy state that if anything, all students should be required to take the class. The schools rebuttal to this is that there simply are not enough resources for this to be possible for all students.
