No need for iPad: Obama has human apps

In the article titled "No need for iPad: Obama has human apps," Obama goes against the idea of the diffusion of innovations which is spoken of in chapter four of our book. The idea that the diffusion of innovations suggests is that many resources, along with the internet, will be created for consumers to use to their own personal benefit. Because Barack Obama is President one would think that he would have advanced technology to help make his job a lot easier. The way that we see Obama’s ignorance of innovations is by using his “iReggie.” Obama explains that his “iReggie” carries everything that he needs such as music, books, newspaper, etc. This iReggie is his personal assistant. By Obama choosing to ignore the advancement of technology he goes against the norm of taking advantage of resources that can limit his dependence on his personal assistant, Reggie. In fact, he buys Michelle Obama one, so we know that money is not the reason that he chooses not to invest into an iPad. Another way that we see Obama’s ignorance to the diffusion of innovaions is by barely using his Blackberry phone. It was reported that the public rarely sees him use his smartphone. Obama may be “old school” but he is the first president to carry a smartphone with Internet and e-mail access.

  1. Hey Devin,
Thank you for sharing. I gotta admit thats pretty funny the "iReggie". When it comes to being president of the United States, technology as well as personal assistants are needed. You have a lot to carry on your shoulders and it would be good to have help. I would probably guess that he does not have alot of time to constantly check his technology (ipad, iphone, ect.)and so it would be easier in that position to have an assistant or assistants. Also, due to high discloser of important information given to the president, for national security, it would probably be easier to have personal and trustworthy assistants to remind him of his schedule, any important information, and upcoming events. However, I do like how you made the connection from the book and this article over diffusiion of innovations, I almost forgot about that term.

Thank you and have a good day!

  2. I understand Obama being resistant towards technology based on his age, but as the President, the head of our country, shouldn't he be accepting it? I would think that just based on the ease of using technology, the way companies have made it simpler, that he would use one as well. My six year old brother can use my iPod, why can't Obama use an iPad. If Obama is dead set on having an assistant, why not have both? He and his assistant can both have iPads, and with Apple's technology they can sync them up to the same computer, synchronizing their calendars, contacts, and everything else. It's just makes things so much more convenient.
